Are Perfumes Endorsed By The Rich And Famous Really All That Special?

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

By Gregg Hall Everyday it seems like I see a new women’s perfume being touted by some celebrity as the next hot thing and with the perfume and cologne industry bringing in over twenty billion dollars a year it’s no surprise that companies are using celebrities to help them corner a piece of this market. The big question is however, are the perfumes being pushed by these stars really worth the money being asked for them? Sometimes the answer to this may depend upon whether or not you really like the fragrance or if you are a huge fan of the celebrity who is endorsing the perfume. What you really need to look at with these perfumes is whether you are actually shelling out your hard earned money for the actual scent or for the name associated with it, those endorsements don’t come cheap. In many cases you will find that the fragrance is just a cheap knock off that can be made anywhere by anyone. In some rare cases you will find distinct scents that cannot be found anywhere else, those are worth considering. One example of an overpriced scent that can be found and remade easily is the one endorsed by Britney Spears. It’s just some simple fragrances blended together that you can get without paying the price for her name. The perfume that is pushed by Beyonce is one that may be worth looking at because it does contain a distinct scent that may be hard to duplicate, you just have to decide if it is worth the money. Then of course we have Paris Hilton who is only famous because she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth. Sorry, but I am just not impressed. She is a master at getting her name out though and of course she endorses a perfume named after her. But, like most other celebrity endorsed perfumes hers is nothing special and could be recreated with a little work. One perfume that I have seen of late that is somewhat unique is the one that Jessica Simpson has reportedly had a hand in making. With scents like coconut, honey, and white chocolate it is quite unique and could be worthwhile. These days you see celebrities selling all kinds of things. Some sports stars actually get paid more for their endorsements than they earn from their sport. The perfume industry is an enormous global business so you will not see it going anywhere but up and you will see companies rely even more on the use of celebrities to help them sell their particular fragrance. My advice is, let the buyer beware. Gregg Hall is an author and internet marketing consultant living in Navarre Florida. Marketing Planning with some Wisdom from Uncle Marty

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

By Gaetan Giannini A strong marketing plan needs to start with a clear understanding of the Vision of your company or business unit. Marketing is a powerful tool when used properly, but it will not get you anywhere unless you know where you want to go. Therefore the first step in your planning exercise is to establish a Vision for your organization. You can define Vision as what you want your business to be in 1, 2 and 5 years with respect to sales, image, products, customers and staff. From this point you need to set some Vision oriented goals. These goals can be very simple, but should be written. Examples are sales in units or dollars, sales growth, profit, change in image, number of leads generated, changes in customer satisfaction, etc. Next comes the tactical plan. That is, what are you going to do? Advertising, direct marketing, PR, promotions, etc. Write them down with some expectation of what they are to accomplish and who is responsible for doing each activity. Infrastructure improvements follow. Tracking systems, the creation of a sales process (Create image & interest, get leads, and make sales), training, sales & distribution channels and location are all areas were the marketing function might find improvement. Now create a timeline. What is going to be done, when and by whom? This can be done on a spreadsheet or written on a chalk board I conference room. It really doesnt matter how it its recorded, just make sure that this is done, and review it once a month. Dont panic if the timeline starts to change. As a matter of fact you should start getting concerned if it never changes. The timeline as well as the entire marketing plan is a fluid entity and it will change over time. Things will get pushed back, some will get completed ahead of schedule, others will get deleted before they get started and new items will be added. As long as all of this is done in a deliberate, intelligent manner change is good. Finally create and use metrics. Use your vision-oriented goals to create measurement criteria that will gage the success of the plan and its implementation. When all is said and done, no one marketing activity is terribly difficult to accomplish. Likewise, no single activity will make or break an organization. It is the continuous cycle of learning, thinking and doing that makes the difference between long-term success and failure. Uncle Marty Everyone has an uncle they like to tell stories about. I am no exception. My uncles name is Marty, and he just happens to be an accomplished sales and marketing professional. Despite the fact that we do discuss our common profession when we get together these days, I want to share something I learned from Uncle Marty when I was a kid. You see, Uncle Marty taught me how to ski, and two of the things he taught me apply in the world of marketing as well as in life in general. Lesson one: Keep your knees bent and stay out of the woods. Its obvious how this advice would come in handy while skiing. Keeping our knees bent teaches us to stay flexible, and adapt to our terrain. In marketing as with skiing we will have our steep slopes, bumps, and icy patches, and flexibility enables us to keep our balance and continue to move forward. Those who are rigid crash. Staying out of the woods is common sense safety. In marketing this principal teaches us that companies have distinct paths cut out before them, and we need to take the company where it is meant to go. Thats not to say we should not take risks (after all skiing itself is a risky endeavor) but our risks should play to the strengths of our organization. Lesson two: If youre not falling down, youre probably not trying hard enough. There is no set formula for marketing. It is a long-term experiment in which we use the information available to us, make the best decisions we can and see how it works. We then use the results of that experiment to improve our next effort and so on. When we do this we will fall down from time to time and make a marketing mistake, but using this method allows to continuously improve our marketing, and it helps prevent us from getting blind sided by unexpected changes in the market. Moving in With Your Girlfriend

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

By Ken Marlborough Moving in with your girlfriend is really big step, which you should not jump into lightly. Before you do this you should make sure that you two are ready for this type of a commitment. There is a really bug difference between dating someone and living with them. For some couples, moving in together became the catalyst for their breakup. Advantages The main advantage of moving in with your girlfriend is getting a chance to know a different side of her. There are some things about a person you will never find out, regardless of how long you have been together. The only way you will find these things out is if you live with her. This is the reason why some engaged couples decide to move in together before their wedding day to see if they really can live together. Disadvantages The morality of living with someone that is not your wife is a major issue when it comes to moving in with your girlfriend. Many people believe that after your wedding day is the only time you should live under that same roof as your significant other. Another disadvantage is that it could cause the breakup of you and your girlfriend. Living together with someone requires a lot of patience and understanding. This is especially true for those who are accustomed to living alone. Living with someone requires a lot of compromise and sacrifice in both of your parts. If a person is so inflexible with their ways that they are unable to accommodate the needs of their significant other, fights will take place between the two of you. Before you decide to move in with your girlfriend you should make sure that you truly know this person, as well as have a relationship that is strong enough to handle the stress and aggravation that comes with living with someone. When to Splitsville

By Johnny Cosmo Never be the last to leave a movie theater. Dont stick around until you give back your winnings in Las Vegas. Dont be the last to leave a party, or someone will hand you a broom and tell you to get busy. Before the evening goes from fun to boring, I slither away like a snake in olive oil. The key to power, attention and your reputation is scarcity. You decrease your value by opening and closing dinner parties. People who arrive later and leave earlier maintain their mystique; when the party begins to slow, bow out gracefully. I dont say goodbye to the forty-two people I was introduced to: thats another amateur move. Unless youre running for mayor, grab the key person at the party and thank them. Anybody else who gets a wink or a handshake on your way to the door is fine. Nothing drains me faster than long goodbyes. I dont like to recap all the small talk on my way out. Bye Debbie; I hope you find your ferret Congratulations on your acquittal, Steve, really! See you dude. Ill send you that emailsoon as I run naked through a synagogue If youre whooping it up with hottie, focus on getting her out of there with you so she doesnt get stuck. Ackerman Vector

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

By Nikoli Funston If you want to get serious about RC, you are going to have to immerse yourself in some of the terminology. The Ackerman Vector is covered here. Since the invention of the wheel and the first use of wagons and carts, the steering arms were parallel to each other. This created certain steering problems, but for the most part wagons moved slowly and the steering difficulties were tolerated. Around the beginning of the 19th century, a man named Rudolf Ackerman worked out a solution using vectored steering arms. The resulting principles have impacted race cars, go karts, and even the steering of RC models. Ackerman is now used as a term to describe the steering geometry that causes the inside front wheel to turn tighter than the outside front wheel. This allows all four wheels to basically roll around a common point during a turn. It is necessary to view a diagram to see the Ackerman Vector. With the use of a diagram, you can see that on an oval track, the inside front tire must turn a larger number of degrees than the outside front tire to achieve true Ackerman steering. Many people refer to Ackerman Vectors as toe-in and toe-out. Toe-in and toe-out refers to the position of the wheel during a turn relative to a line marking the true circumference of the turning circle. When the wheel is toe-in, it is trying to turn in a sharper circle than the true circumference. When the wheel is toe-out it is trying to turn in a wider circle than the true circumference. This is often termed true Ackerman, more Ackerman, or less Ackerman. The terms refer to how far the wheel vectors are off from true Ackerman steering geometry. The wheel vectors are set by how the steering arms are located and vectored. RC racing fans have made use of Ackerman steering geometry to improve the turning performance of their models. There are other factors concerned with improved traction in high speed turning such as slip vector. Although there are plenty of guides available that give advice on proper steering arm position, trial and error is often the best way of determining the proper vectors for an individual model. Ackerman vectors are important in full sized racing cars and go karts. It is a reflection of the increased complexity of RC models and the highly competitive nature of RC racing that they have become of such interest to hobbyist as well. The person who still views RC operation and racing as merely pressing a button and operating a controller will quickly learn that construct methods and proper set up are as important here as at any other race track regardless of its size.
