Medical Schools

Monday, March 31st, 2008

By Michael Bustamante Medical schools, colleges, and universities lay the foundation for careers in fields of medicine for aspiring nurses, technicians, therapists, and doctors. Students have many choices for gaining a solid medical education. The various accredited medical schools each declare various educational missions and teaching methods; this allows students to find the one medical degree program that suits personal goals and individual expectations. Some specializations that can be found in medical schools are: public health, medical doctor, nursing, psychiatry, physical therapy, engineering, biochemistry, primary care, research, academics, and biomedical engineering, among others. Students should consider if they prefer teaching or working with people over performing research in laboratories. The choice of schools, as well as courses and programs of study can greatly influence life-long endeavors. Students should carefully consider selected medical schools and medical programs so as to choose a medical education that is complementary to long-term objectives and life goals. They should be mindful of time constraints, community or social needs, and personal interests. Generally, medical training will begin with studies of anatomy, physiology, biology, pharmacology, and pathology. Second year students will focus on fields of choice and specializations. Nursing degrees from medical schools can vary, including such programs as Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Registered Nurse (RN), and Master of Science in Nursing with specializations in areas, such as Psychiatric-Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist (PMH-CNS) or Psychiatric-Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist/Nurse Practitioner (PMH-CNS and NP). Clinical nursing classes are included in the final two or three years of nursing training. Courses for RN programs will include theory and clinical experience in various hospital and clinical settings. Psychiatric studies will include mental health, behavioral sciences, research, theory, counseling practices, and much more. A wide selection of specializations are possible in this field, including substance abuse treatment, counseling, community health programs, and psychiatric and psychological doctor. The third year for aspiring doctors preparing for professions in internal medicine will depend on the chosen school. Some medical schools depend heavily on reading and lectures, while others teach almost exclusively in laboratory settings. Some begin teaching programs by focusing on a single organ and its functions, examining the anatomy, pharmacology, pathology, and behavior of the systems involved with that one organ. Learning may take place in clinics or laboratories under the guidance of a professor. These are good choices for self-directed students who will succeed as members of a team. The subject of internal medicine will move studies into clinical work, with students taking residency in hospitals associated with schools, and making clinical and surgical rotations. Education in this setting may be more important than the actual choice of schools, as characteristics of hospitals greatly influence the students’ experience. Urban hospitals deal with trauma and emergency medicine, or infectious diseases in diverse ethnic populations. Hospital size, specialties, technology, and mortality rates will also affect experiences that determine the type of physician, psychiatrist, nurse, or biochemist the student will become. Many hospitals are actively involved in the communities in which they reside. Volunteer opportunities in clinical care can be very rich and educationally rewarding in these settings. Pursuing a career in biomedical research should be undertaken only at medical schools with proven leadership roles in medical research. The same is true for students interested in academic medicine (Doctor of Philosophy, PhD), i.e., students interested in teaching should consider schools with a reputation for state-of-the-art academics and those that take an experimental approach to medicine and treatments, such as those schools associated with children’s hospitals, cardiovascular hospitals, or oncology treatment centers. Adolescence Suicide - How to Prevent Part-4

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

By S Kalpna Sharma My dear esteem Ezine readers, today I would share with you my findings of various studies about the increasing tendency amongst new generation of teenagers and adolescences in the world. Though this problem is less known in third world countries but it is more common in developed and developing countries. Shri Jagan Nath BA, a noted social worker used to say quote Adolescents are like unripe half cast earthen pitcher, whatsoever shape the potter desires, he moulds unquote. He was of the view that parents, teachers and elders responsibility are to ensure that: one, our teenagers become the best human; two, best socially adaptable beings; three strong enough to bear any type of hardship; four be polite so that others love them; five be fearsome, worrisome and bothersome; six very judicious and sensible and; seven enthusiast, tough and agile to face ever increasing challenges of life. Based on above theme, I will dwell upon various issues which attribute towards teenagers suicide. All of you would agree that as and when a teenager has committed suicide; we united have failed to perceive his/her state of mind MSSR and VCD attributes. In this article, I would like to further progress the debate on different issues affecting a teenagers delicate state of mind. The first issue is related to the role of electronic media, televisions, magazines and various other vulgar materials which even distract most of the adults as well. How far are we responsible for making world vulgar? In the name of truth, today the electronic media has forgotten her social role. Every one knows that under the garment every one is naked but how you project this statement is the witty vision of media. Similarly, one eyed man is blind from an eye is the truth but directly addressing him as a blind XYZ would tantamount to abusing him but courteous address word would not anger him as much as bluntly being called a blind man. Today, the world media is actually misusing the right of information and liberty to pollute the society, thus, poisoning the minds of teens through their bedroom serials. So far, the world electronic media has, by and large, failed to live up to the expectations of the society. The true example could be ascertained from the fact that the media continued to telecast news of bare breast of super model whose bra had slipped down during cat walk on ramp. You will agree that our electronic media has penetrated every common mans bedroom through shows and programs. In the name of liberty, most of the televised shows are directly airing offensive and obscene immoral shows, thus, intoxicating teenagers mind at a very tender age. The fact, parents cannot compel their children itself is indicator of downfall of liberty of moral responsibilities of social pundits. The Muslim worlds hue and cry to stop Western telecast are purely due to fear of poisoning the orthodox society. I also, by and large, agree with Muslims view point of preventing vulgarity at home through media. Why at all, there are over 36,000 child porno sites on the internet? Why any government should be asking to prosecute such criminals? How deeply a teenagers mind is affected by media is difficult to fathom but how effectively it has disturb and developed Mental Disorder in their tender minds is easy to see. As the electronic media is the most effective mean of affecting teenagers mind, it should be used to save their lives and not poison. In view of the above, I suggest; Teenagers be educated to differentiate between vulgarity, obscenity and simplicity; Advise to only view programs suiting their age; Be explained as to why a program is aired to eradicate which social evil; Educate teenagers to learn on need to know basis as per their age. I often remember that when I was nearly fourteen years of age, an elder in our village has left for heavenly abode. When I tried to accompany his corpse with villagers to the crematorium, my father Shri Jagan Nath BA said quote it is a pious duty of everyone to honor and accompany anybodys departed souls corpse to crematorium but today you have not yet grown enough to accompany, therefore, return to the house. When you grow, you can go with others unquote. How deliberately and effectively my father had cultured me; both for my social and material obligations is worth noting. Educate your teenagers to be selective in viewing various programs; Always remind your teenagers that all shows are like dreams and far away from the realities of life, therefore, never try to impersonate yourself with the television or other comic characters. Never be harsh with teenagers in checking the viewing; rather educate as to why you want to check; Internet Media through which many teenagers have been victimized. In some case, these teenagers have ended their lives before even actually understanding the true meaning of marriage and their social responsibilities. Various groups, promoted to become friends; and thereafter, exploit teenagers are such bad and malevolence epidemics spread in the society. With out understanding the real encumbrances of marriage institution of society, numerous teenagers are committing suicide after plunging into it. To just overcome the desires of lust spread through media, they wed without their elders blessing, thus later leading them to commit suicide. The second issue revolves around the glamour and glitter of celebrity status and its hyped affect on todays teenagers. As the teenagers begin to live in their own dream world on entering teens, therefore, any impediment is viewed seriously. The vulgar porno activists sometimes become the role model of thousands of teenagers. While the teenagers have failed to comprehend as to how such people have become celebrity through irresponsible media glamour and catch-ups on one side, the parents neglect in blocking such vulgar sites on the other. The failure of various countries governments in setting norms for a social society, have resulted in such peoples elevation as vulgarity symbols. Mushrooming of hundreds of porno sites from United State of America, Europe and some Middle East countries need to be strongly curbed. Infact, large number of such sites are uploaded from US. How should we grow our children is not the matter; but what should we make our children socially responsible matters most in todays environment. Now days, the entire stress of our education system is to nurture our future teenagers on materialistic world with some social responsibilities. In the present days modern system of education, all the countries barring a few Muslim are more or less directed to educate as to how to accumulate worldly wealth and not to develop the social character. The Indian old education system of Sages and Saints was invented to; one first develop strong individual character, two identify students suitability for different walks of life; and three then impart specialize higher education to student in a particular field of life but the present system is filled with flaws thus making teenagers vulnerable to all type of threats. My esteem readers would be surprised to know that every year thousands of girl teenagers are being pushed into flesh trade and prostitution due to various reasons in all over the world. Thirdly, I would say that teenager who is bubbling with the curiosity to explore the world with whatsoever little knowledge they possess are easiest target to penetrate. Why teenagers fall easy pray is due to: One; High ability to take risk in life. The teenagers being immature are unable to analyze problems deeply, thus taking risk without fully knowing its implications. Two; inquisitiveness to explore and learn early; all neglected teenagers have been generally found to be indulging in trying to know about the life and world early. A large number of teenagers have succumbed to various criminals and unlawful people. Three; curiosity to compete with others as I am the first; It is revealed from the study of few cases of girls suicide; that they had too end their lives because in the urge to know first, they had fallen pray to the wrong doers. After knowing the weaknesses of teenagers, we can introduce steps to prevent teenagers suicide. Once again role of parents and teachers is significant in guiding and steering such teenagers to a respectable social life. I would further recommend that we have to make our electronic and print media more accountable and responsible towards the society. Such media shows exposing vulgarity and nudity must stop even if it is achieved at the cost of curbing some liberties. The truth of liberty that every human being is born naked, therefore, all human should live as such, can only be allowed in jungle and forests but not in a civilized society. I would further dwell upon the issues to prevent teenagers suicide. The irritants which teenagers hate would also be touched up on. I convey my appreciation and sincere thanks to all Ezine esteem readers once again. I, S kalpna Sharma am a freelance writer who generally writes on various issues relating human values. This year I have also decided to seek ezinereaders help in making the year Suicide Free Teenagers Year-2007 (SFTY-007). I am likely to generate awareness amongst readers to spread the message to prevent suicide of adolescence boys and girls. Fioricet: Migraine Remedy Medication Or Just Another Headache?

Friday, March 28th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ian_Mason] Ian Mason Weve all had garden variety headaches from time to time. Getting sleep, drinking water, or taking aspirin or Tylenol lets you squash these tension headaches (as doctors call them) quickly and easily. But if you suffer from severe or chronic tension headaches, you know that headaches can take over your work and family life. A study by the American Headache Society shows that 70% of chronic headache sufferers have significant problems with daily functioning because of the headaches. Migraine sufferers have symptoms in addition to headache; they may spend days each month in a darkened room because the pain and light-sensitivity are unbearable otherwise. Fioricet: A New Option Fioricet is one of the drugs that researchers have developed to manage headaches. It has been found to be effective for tension headaches. While studies havent shown it to be effective for migraine sufferers overall, some people with migraines seem to find it helpful as well. Fioricet gets its effect from three different ingredients that attack different parts of your headache, just like a good laundry detergent has different ingredients to tackle grease, odors, and dirt. So how does the dynamic trio work? Fioricet has three parts, two of which may be old friends: Butalbital Acetominophen Caffeine Butalbital is a barbiturate; like other barbiturates, it has a relaxing effect. Butalbital will help you relax and make you feel a bit drowsy, which seems to help with tension headaches. Acetominophen is a drug that you may recognize as the active ingredient in Tylenol. It can help with pain relief especially when combined with a relaxant. Caffeine gives you the buzz that you may feel after drinking tea, coffee, or colas, or eating chocolate. Caffeine helps to reduce blood flow to the brain. Many scientists believe that too much blood flowing to the brain is part of what causes chronic tension headaches, so caffeine can reduce that effect. Fioricet as part of your pain-management system As headache sufferers, anything that might help get our lives back to normal sounds like a God-send. But there a couple of questions you should ask yourself before talking with your doctor about a prescription Do I have migraines? If you dont know, talk about your symptoms with your doctor before deciding that Fioricet is a good fit for you. Is operating heavy machinery or doing a lot of driving part of my daily life? If you take a little too much Fioricet of if youre very sensitive to barbiturates, it can create the feelings and behaviors of someone who has had too much alcohol. Being drunk is not a good mix with operating a crane or driving carloads of kids to school, soccer practice, and the library! Do I need a pain-killer at least once a day? Fioricet can make you dependent on it. Dependence can lead to rebound headaches (headaches as the drug leaves your system) and even more serious health consequences. Your doctor might suggest using Fioricet as a back-up medication - to use it for the days where your regular medication doesnt work. And if youve previous experienced dependence on another drug (including alcohol), this medication is not for you. Ive Thought It Over, So Whats My Next Step? Take the prescription to your local pharmacy or on-line drug store so its ready for your use at the sign of the first stubborn headache. Discussing any problems or side effects like dizziness or drowsiness with your doctor will help you manage this drug and can make it part of your plan for a pain-free life! One True Life Story Of A Russian Gold-Digger

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

By John Kunkle My wife went to her ESL class in America one day. Her teacher introduced her to another young woman from Belarus. We shall call her Valentina, which is not her real name. Her real name has been changed to protect the not so innocent. She spoke no English. Valentina told this long story about being brought to America by a man who was thirty years older than her. She said that he refused to feed her and take care of her. She said she ran away from him and was staying at the home of another Russian family. She had exceeded the three months allowed by the fianc visa, without marrying the man who brought her here. She was now in America illegally. My wife invited her to dinner. She invited a friend of mine to dinner as well, who is an attorney, hoping that he could give her some advice. Valentina asked my wife if she cooked for me every day. My wife said yes. Valentina explained to her in Russian that she would not be bothered with any of that. Valentina asked my wife if I had a maid. My wife explained that she did the cleaning. Again Valentina turned her nose up at the idea of household chores. Valentina didnt eat much at dinner, but she drank nearly a bottle of wine by herself. The wine loosened her lips. Valentina explained that the man who brought her to America had mental problems. She said he acted like a bird, flapping his arms like wings, as he danced around his car. Valentina said she knew of his mental problems before she came to America, but she came anyway. She said she didnt know if she would have another chance to get to America otherwise. My friend, the attorney, tried to offer her legal help. He offered her a job cleaning his house if she needed some extra money. Valentina explained to my wife, in Russian, in no uncertain terms, that she would rather earn money in a different way, rather than housework. She asked how my wife could stand being around these fat old men, referring to my friend and I. My wife got more and more angry with Valentina as the evening wore on. She cut off all relationship with her after that evening. We heard through the grapevine that Valentina was on her way to Los Angeles to get her visa problems taken care of. She was probably now in the hands of the Russian Mafia people she could understand because they thought just like her. John has been married to a Russian women for over five years. He has travelled the path from finding her, to traveling to Russia, to bring his wife to America, and adjusting to married life. He will show you step by step how to do this yourself.http://www.russian-luv.com/valentina.html Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=John_Kunkle http://EzineArticles.com/?One-True-Life-Story-Of-A-Russian-Gold-Digger&id=332616 best prices for zolpidem online ambien 5 mg ambien drug side effect ambien erfahrung

How To Read Food Labels So You Know Exactly What You Are Eating

Monday, March 24th, 2008

By Gregg Hall More and more food companies are coming up with more and more ways to make food cheaper, more convenient to consume, and tastier. With these come new ingredients, skewed nutrition and a lack of understanding for what you are consuming. When you don’t understand what you are consuming, you are risking your health. For instance: not knowing a bag stating “50 calories per serving” means you have to multiply servings to know the total amount of calories, rather than the common misconception that “per serving” means “per bag”. As the average food intake increases, so does the perception on what a serving size means. It is surprising that many people find their perception on what a single serving is, turns out to be about two or three servings in reality! The ability to read food labels is one of the most effective ways to make good food selections. It spells out the amounts and types of nutrients in the food per serving. However, for this label to be helpful and expend its effectiveness, you must be able to understand what it is saying: Serving Size States amounts of nutrients per serving. If you follow the serving size, you acquire the amount of nutrients the label states you will get “per serving”. For example, if you read “one serving equals 5 chips”, and that there are 50 calories per serving, eating 5 chips would give you 50 calories. Eating 10 chips would give you 100 calories, and so on. If the bag says it contains 5 servings, you would take 50 and multiply it by 5 to figure out the total amount of calories you’ve consumed. Nutrients The nutrients are generally based on the daily dietary allowance stated (these are usually based on 2,500 or 2,000 calorie diets). To understand what you are taking in, know that these are based on how the food corresponds to the dietary allowance for a 2,000 calorie diet. If you’ve purchased something different from the 2,000 calorie diet, divide the amount by 2,000 and you will find your nutrient’s % daily value. Ingredients A list of all of the items used to produce the product. The list generally begins with the most heavily-used ingredient, and descends into the ingredient least used in the product. Label Claim This is the term used for sayings such as “sodium-free!” (Which simply means that it has less than 5 mgs per serving). Understanding food labels is a very good thing to learn and do. It’s important to take care of your body, by taking notice of what you intake, and rationing it out so it stays at a healthy level. Once you understand how to read food labels, you hold the power to take care of yourself. Indeed, reading food labels can be very tedious and confusing. Nevertheless, once you get the hang of it, it would be easier for you to watch your diet because you can already control the amount of food that you take. Wedding loans enable you to make once in a life time day a memorable one by spending lavishly for the occasion that every one waits for. The increasing average cost of marriage in the UK is making wedding loans gain more popularity. A recent research from Alliance and Leicester, one of the UK’s major financial services group shows that almost one-in-five UK residents will need to borrow in order to meet their marriage expenses. The figures issued by the Bank shows that the cost of an average wedding is now more than 17,000, a rise of 13 per cent from 15,000 last year. The research also revealed that many Brits who are engaged were under-estimating the potential cost of the event by as much as 155 per cent. Many were under the wrong impression that their wedding will cost 6,650 on an average. So, make it sure that you have enough finance available to you before you decide to enter an altogether new phase in your life. Wedding loans can be secured or unsecured depending upon the fact that whether collateral is required or not when availing such loans. Resume Writing - 3 Do’s and Don’ts

Thursday, March 20th, 2008

By Adrianna Kristian Do: 1) Include a powerful, concise and persuasive objective or summary. How do you do that? Well there are many different ways to grab an employers attention with an objective or summary - some much better than others - but here’s a general rule. State exactly what you want to do for the employer (you could give the position you are seeking) and what you have to offer them. (3 years experience, expertise in skill X) 2) Use a bulleted list rather than long, redundant paragraphs. Seeing a long list of paragraphs is intimidating. Employers don’t have time to read through so much information - they want the facts and they want them quickly. Break up your paragraphs into a bulleted list of accomplishments. 3) Organize it. Make your resume look good! A page full of texts “blobs” will turn off any employer. Break it up into organized sections with bold headings and include plenty of white space to create a calming, peaceful effect. Don’t: 1) Include your references with your resume. This isn’t necessary - when you come in for an interview you can bring them. 2) Include any information that doesn’t contribute to the job. For instance, many ‘professionals’ will tell you to include your interests or hobbies in your resume. Why? Why would the employer want to know that you like to go rock climbing if you’re interested in an accounting position? If your interests or hobbies contribute to the job you are seeking - GREAT! Include them. Otherwise leave them out. 3) Include a list of mundane(and obvious)job duties that employers dont care about. Employers already know the duties that a bookkeeper or car salesman has. Giving them a list of your duties doesnt make you stand out. What they want to know is how your past experience and accomplishments can contribute to their company. Be a Smarter Marketer - Learn the L-A-W for Trade Shows

Monday, March 17th, 2008

By Julia O’Connor People attend trade shows because they are in a specific industry and want to learn more. They want to know whats new and how you will help them. So, you print up lots of fancy brochures, develop demonstrations, have unique gifts or hand-outs - and want to get rid of it all before the end of the show, so you dont have to ship it home. If you think your only job as an exhibitor is to GIVE information, you are wrong. You exhibit at trade shows because you are in a specific industry and need to keep up with trends. You need to know whats new and how it will affect you, your suppliers, your partners and your clients. Trade shows are the ideal time for you to GATHER information. The show gives you the opportunity to gather market intelligence that is important to your particular company. Here are three simple steps to being a smarter marketer: LISTEN for 1. New words. New words means there are changes in your industry you dont know about. It may be a technology, a process or a company, but learn all you can while at the show. 2. New concerns. When people visit your booth, listen carefully for their underlying concerns about the economy, competition, mergers, politics, big issues. These may affect your business later, so begin to prepare now. ASK about 1. What you need to know. Before the show, determine critical information you would like to have for your company. Ask other people in your company what they would like to know, not just whats important to your division or department. 2. Trends. You dont know everything. People are flattered when you ask their opinion about changes in their specific part of the industry. WRITE it down 1. Right now. Trade shows are busy, noisy environments. You cant trust your memory, so write the information down on the lead card or other form you will keep. 2. For distribution. After the show, take all the information you have gathered and write a confidential report about what you learned. Distribute it to those people in your organization who need to know and can act on this information. Three simple steps to make you more aware of your industry and to keep your company in the forefront. Julia O’Connor - Speaker, Author, Consultant - writes about practical aspects of trade shows. As president of Trade Show Training, inc,, now celebrating its 10th year, she works with companies in a variety of industries to improve their bottom line and marketing opportunities at trade shows. Fishing Grubs, The React Lure for all Seasons

Friday, March 14th, 2008

By Michael Klasno One of the most versatile of all lures, the grub mimics baitfish better than almost any other soft plastic bait, and they can be fished many different ways and all year round. A grub’s fat short body and thin twisting tail displaces a tremendous amount of water as it moves along, the bass picks up the vibrations with its lateral lines and movement means food. Once the bass has found the bait its natural shape and color gives him no reason to suspect a trap. In cold water, winter and early spring, the fish are more sluggish and a slower more deliberate presentation is necessary to fool them. Flipping, and Topwater Grubin’ and Shakin’ are excellent techniques to catch grub fish this time of year. In the southern most reaches of the west the bass will come into the shallows on warm days, even in winter. Grubs will entice even the most sluggish bass in these conditions. FLIPPIN’ John Bailey, a Southern California bass fisherman known for his Jig prowess, flips for bass all year long. “In winter and early spring I like to start with the sunny tulle and bulrush areas and the rocky shorelines first.” Says John “In our local lakes most of these areas are in less than 7 feet of water and warm up very quickly, the shad seem to find these areas, and where there are shad there are hungry bass.” Bailey uses little or no weight, a 3/16oz. slip sinker at most does the job, and Gamakatsu EWG hooks. “I like the slow fall effect that no weight gives me, I just watch the line.” John uses 14# test flouro carbon line on a Quantum flipping reel and a 7′ Graphite rod. “You need a light line for this technique, but this is no place for 6 or 8# test, the fish will go deep into the tulles the moment he gets the bait so the heavier line helps get his head turned and coming towards me”. Like many West Coast fishermen, John’s first lure of choice is the Yamamoto grub, he flips a 4″ smoke pepper or smoke sparkle w/blue flake. “Using the slip sinker instead of a heavy jig head it’s easier to put it where I want it without making a big splash”. If the fish are feeding on smaller shad John switches to a 3″ Saturn grub from Phoenix. John points out that it is important to be accurate with your cast But don’t disrupt the area if you are wrapped on a reed or deeper into the tulles than you wanted to be. “On those casts that weren’t perfect, work the bait where it falls, bass will come get a bait in the strangest places”. “You need to keep your rod in strike position, don’t get caught asleep at the wheel” Says Bailey. “Be ready it can happen at any time.” I like using a slow lift and fall motion followed by a shake, you need to watch the line closely where it enters the water, if it goes slack before reaching the bottom or twitches, set the hook.” Fishing the outside edges of the wood beds with a small Texas rigged zipper grub is another of Bailey’s cold water techniques. John pegs the sinker and works the crawdad colored zipper slowly. If the fish are deep in the wood Bailey uses a crawdad or shad colored, Yamamoto single tail Hula grub. John rigs these on a Gamakatsu football head and crawls it along the bottom near the brush and fallen trees. “You have to be careful hear, I use an exposed hook football head and a miscast will cost you.” Says John. “If you get snagged in the trees with these hooks you will either mess up the area getting it loose or lose a $1.50 lure setup.” But fishing with John Bailey has taught me a few things, and one thing is sure, the reward is worth the risk. TOP WATER GRUBBIN’ Every bass angler who has been on the water for any length of time gets excited when he sees flooded timber, it has to hold Bass. But, what are the key elements to decide good timber from great timber. To start with I look for old timber as opposed to green, fresh timber. I am told that new fall or flooded timber leaches sap, and the water quality is not conducive to forage fish. On the other hand the old timber tends to rot. This in turn attracts insects, which attract small forage fish like shad and bluegill, the rest of the food chain follows. My first target is the flooded timber closest to an old channel or creek bed, If this area has a small feeder creek running into it, all the better. Most fishermen see this area and reach for their spinnerbait or Jig rod. It wouldn’t be a wrong choice, a spinnerbait is a great tool for timber, and if you are good with a Jig you will probably pick up some of the more aggressive fish. But next time try a surface grub. I use a 6′ 6″ medium action Graphite spinning rod. Tied to the end of the 12# string is a 4″ Bass Ripper grub. The long tailed, zipper style grub is rigged Texas with a 2/0 EWG Gamakatsu hook and a pegged 1/16 oz. bullet weight. I like the flat style body of the Bass Ripper because it helps slow the fall and the long flutter tail and small silhouette is very enticing to big bass. Another good choice in a larger profile would be a 5″ Yamamoto Grub or a big 6″ tube bait. When fishing a grub in this manner you can be very deliberate and work much slower than a spinnerbait. The twitch and pause method keeps it bait in the strike zone much longer. With the Texas rig and Pegged sinker I can work right over a fallen tree and use the “kill” technique, bass hate this. I can also throw it right into the weeds. SHAKIN’ THAT THING If your target fish are bunched up in deeper water, you need a different approach. Shaking a grub will entice those sluggish brutes to bite. I like a rod with plenty of backbone but a fast tip for this technique. The key here is light line, I use 8# Trilene XL but any quality line will do. Attach a smaller, crawfish-colored Hula-grub to a fine wire 1/0 or 2/0 hook and a 1/4oz. brass n’ glass setup. Rig your bait of choice Texas-style, make sure you push the hook all the way through before skinning the grub with the point. For fish holding the bottom, position your boat right over the structure, channel break or bait school you are fishing. If you are new to shakin’, the principle is quite simple. After the bait reaches the bottom, start shaking the rod tip gently to rattle the brass n’ glass. Work the complete structure keeping a light hold with your thumb and index finger to feel for subtle bites. Beware here, not all bites will be subtle, some will be vicious. For suspended fish the shaking technique is the same, but position your boat slightly up current and cast a shad colored bait past the fish. Most bass pros will tell you that a fish won’t go down to get a bait, but most will come up to hit it. When your bait is to the desired depth use a slight lift pause motion while shaking, bringing in just enough of the slack line to stay in the strike zone. The slow fall and natural swimming motion of a grub’s tail coupled with that aggravating click of the B & G will entice most suspended fish to attack. One final note: The key to fishing any of these techniques is persistence, don’t give up, stay focused. If your spinnerbait or Jig technique isn’t working, try fishing a grub. And if they’re still not biting. go somewhere else. And remember, this is supposed to be fun. THE REACT LURE FOR ALL SEASONS WINTER: For shallow fish, flip 3-4″ grubs, for deeper fish shake 3″single tail or 4″ twin Hula-grubs.For suspended fish, match the baitfish, size & color. SPRING: Try sight fishing a 3″ white or glitter grub. for Topwater use a 5 or 7″ smoke pepper grub or Tube bait. SUMMER: For shallow fish go back to flippin, but use a larger 5-7″ grub. For inactive fish try a split shot rig on a small 3” zipper style grub. FALL: For shallow fish, pitch and flip 4″ grubs and for active fish swim or split shot techniques. Using Herbs and Herbal Remedies as Medicine

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

By Kathy Burns-Millyard Using herbs as a form of medicine has been done for thousands of years. And many people still use herbs, herbal remedies, teas, poultices, and supplements today to help keep their body healthy, and to help take care of their families. Many people have started learning however, that there are plenty of herbs which will actually do more than keep you healthy though. Herbs can be used as a medicine alternative to high priced, prescription drugs which often have risky side effects. Using herbs for medicine takes a bit of study, research and learning, but it’s well worth it over time. Herbs are much more gentle on your body, and they can be livesaving for anyone who doesn’t have health insurance because they’re quite inexpensive to buy. One of the first things you need to learn about using herbs for medicine though, is that there can be side effects, and there can be interactions with regular prescription drugs too. Just because herbs are natural does not mean they’re not powerful. There are herbs which can raise your blood pressure for instance, herbs which will make a pregnant woman have a miscarriage, and herbs which are natural sources of insulin to lower your blood sugar too. So knowing which herbs do what is extremely important. One of the problems with trends and fads these days, is that one herb will be touted as being a miracle drug for one specific health condition. What’s left unsaid though, is all the other things these herbs will do too. Most herbs can be used for a wide variety of things in your body. Unlike prescription medications which are made to treat just one thing, many herbs can be used to treat a wide variety of things. Garlic for instance, is an herb which has gotten popular for using to manage blood pressure problems. This herb will also regulate blood sugar levels though. Plus it will help kill any virus or infection in your body, and it can be used outside your body to kill yeast infections, athlete’s foot, and oral thrush among other things. Goldenseal is another herb which has gained mainstream popularity in the last ten years or so, because it’s an excellent natural antibiotic. Most people don’t know however, that this herb is also a natural source of insulin, and larger doses of Goldenseal can be dangerous if taken by hypoglycemics or insulin dependent diabetics. These are just two small examples of course, and there are many more. Simply by being aware of all the various things an herb can do for you though, and choosing your herbs wisely, herbs and natural remedies can be a goldmine of health, wellness, and medicine for you and your loved ones.
