Beauty Care Products: Reality and Hype

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

By Agostino Rossi Do you spend a lot of money on beauty care products? Do you wonder what works and what doesn’t, and how much is really worth paying for a beauty care product? Well, the last question really depends on how much money you have and what you expect to get for your money, but the first question is worth spending a little time on. Let’s take two popular beauty care products, chosen at random, and consider what the label says and what the ingredient list tells us: St. Ives Swiss Formula Apricot Scrub and Clairol Herbal Essences Citrus Lift Shampoo. The Apricot Scrub product package tells us to “Discover the Swiss Secrets for Smooth, Radiant Skin,” and brags about containing “Pure Swiss Glacial Water.” A quick read of the ingredients list reveals the following in order of total quantity: water, glyceryl stearate, glycerin, cetearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, corn kernal meal, cocamidopropyl betaine, and more than 13 additional ingredients, some recognizable and some with long chemical names. The Citrus Lift shampoo bottle brags about its “100% certified organic blend of tangerine, lemongrass, and aloe.” Reading the ingredient list reveals, in order of total quantity: water, sodium laureth sulfate, sodium lauryl sulfate, cocamidopropyl betaine, sodium chloride, citric acid, sodium citrate, and then finally the tangerine extract, followed by more than 13 additional ingredients, most with long chemical names. Now, what does all this mean? First of all, pure water is pure water whether it comes from a melting glacier or from a water distiller or distillation and deionization machine in a cosmetics factory. Second, our hair and skin can’t tell whether an extract of tangerine came from an organically grown tangerine or from the more common variety. These things, glacier water and organic fruits, are in the realm of hype - nice sounding marketing words, but not related to the actual performance of the beauty care products at hand. So, what makes these commercial beauty care products better than just plain soap? Science. Science in the form of ingredients like the one, in addition to water, present in both the scrub and the shampoo: cocamidopropyl betaine. This compound is used in more than 1,000 shampoo, bubble bath and hand and face cleansing products. It helps to enhance foaming and helps to stabilize the foam while providing good wetting properties (the ability of the cleaner to get through the oil that can repel soap and water from skin and hair). This ingredient is in so many products because the people who developed the products found out that it is safe and effective for this application, the results of basic and applied scientific work. It is the science and chemistry, not the hype that makes these beauty care products work. The hype helps you agree to pay the price asked by the large, profitable shampoo, cosmetics and beauty care products companies that sell you the products. Do you want to know something interesting? You can buy a gallon bottle of cocamidopropyl betaine for $14.55 and you can pick up a five-gallon pail for only $68.75. That’s a lot of shampoo, face scrub and bubble bath! In fact, one gallon is enough for more than 250 twelve ounce bottles of shampoo. Not surprisingly, the total cost of the ingredients in most beauty products is far less than the price you pay at a brick and mortar store or cosmetics online store for the product. In the next article in this series, we will discuss some beauty care products you can make at home that work just as well as most of the high-priced beauty care products from the store or cosmetics online website For other articles by Agostino Rossi, visit http://www.want2knowwhat.com, http://www.betterloveiseasy.com and http://www.mednewsyoucanuse.com today. By Titus Hoskins Discount coupons have long been used by merchantsand companies to market their products. Coupons havea lengthy history. The whole concept of coupons first started in 1894 when the druggist Asa Candler gave out ‘handwritten tickets’ for a free class of Coca-Cola! This proved to be a successful venture and we’re still drinking the secret black mixture even today. Just the very next year, C.W. You can read more on the history of coupons here: www.couponmonth.com And according to this same coupon site, coupons are becoming even more popular with 76% of the American population using coupons. The average coupon was only worth $1 but in total it saved shoppers around $3 Billion in 2004. Companies andmanufacturers offered up more than $300 Billion incoupons in the same year. This amounts to significantsavings for the prudent consumer. Interpreting the Bagua - A Beginner’s Guide to Feng Shui

Friday, February 8th, 2008

By Marie Schoonover People new to Feng Shui, especially those interested in becoming a practitioner, are sometimes surprised and confused by the bagua concept. They expect something a little more complex and involved. But, as it turns out, the magic is in the simplicity. You can understand the bagua better if you look at it through the eyes of a child rather than a learned scholar. A child has an attitude of hope and enthusiasm, uncluttered with the confusion or the irrelevance we acquire as adults. Choose to accept the Bagua as simplistic universal truth and its secrets will be revealed to you. I have found it helpful sometimes to think of the bagua as a well thought out and ordered filing cabinet. The nine folders in this file contain all the possible life events you may experience. What could we find simpler on the surface and yet potentially so complex underneath. If we try to unravel its mysteries intellectually we will fail. The universe is far too miraculous for the human mind to comprehend. On the surface these nine squares appear pretty straightforward, but look at the bagua closely, study it, try to dispute it, try to add or subtract from it, try to think of a life experience that does not fit into one of the squares, or try to take away one of the squares as unessential. It cant be done. But as simple as it looks, who can juggle nine balls without help? Feng Shui through the bagua provides that help. But it wont make sense to your intellect; it must simply be accepted on faith for it to begin to work. Feng Shui works on your behalf and translates your intentions into the thinking stuff that the universe can work with. “But how in the heck can the color of a chair be responsible for me getting that new job or not?” The chair and the color are only symbols of the underlying forces at work. Feng Shui and the symbols you use are the guardians of your intentions and have been put in place to remind the universe where you want to go and request it to help find the best way to arrive. The underlying power is unfathomable and must simply be accepted. There in lies the wonder of Feng Shui and of the bagua. It takes the complexities of life and simplifies them into a nine square picture, and thereby gives you a tool to connect to universal truths that will bring order and harmony to your life. So, what about the bagua, how can something so simple be so powerful. The bagua concept is used to connect us to power we cannot understand as human beings. It connects us to a higher power that knows our best interests and how to achieve them. Our existence is far too complex for us to manage by our own resources. The harder we try to control our lives the more frustrated and folded up we get. We need help. We need to be in harmony with our environment to gain control. The Universe, in its broadest definition, is extremely dynamic and changing, yet balanced and controlled, it is deliberate and patient. We on the other hand tend to be indulgent and impatient. We want to live our lives in a day and we want everything immediately. The universe does not work that way. It does not run on our human timetable. The bagua reminds us of our environment and the balance it requires. Balance and patient is what Feng Shui teaches us, and the bagua is the tool or road map to find the happiness that we seek. So lets look at this wonderment of wisdom and simplicity. As I mentioned above try to think of a life experience that does not fit in one of the nine squares. You can not. Its all there. Nine areas of human existence in a certain order related one to the other and each one balanced. Look at the bagua and see the relationships that exist. See how each area is dependent on the others and none is more important than the next. How many examples of unhappy people can you think of and now realize its due to imbalance. See the people with lots of money who are so unbalanced in relationships and love. Did I say Hollywood? See how many people are imbalanced with their career and their family life is in shambles. How many people have you seen that have all the Fame and Reputation that the world has to offer only to abuse their health to a point of dying years ahead of their time. Are you getting the message? Balance and moderation will bring you in harmony and allow you to achieve the happiness you desire. Balance and moderation is what optimizes your life and brings you all the abundance that is really available and waiting for you to claim. Once your grasp this basic concept of Feng Shui you are ready to move on and see all the power packed wisdom this little nine square bagua map really contains. Snacking Yourself Thinner

Friday, February 8th, 2008

By Marius Bezuidenhout We all feel guilty about our snacking habits and think that eating all day is why we put on weight but the good news is you CAN have your snack and lose weight! From the start of the year - when we make our new years resolutions to every Sunday evening before the week commences, we all have good intentions when it comes to eating healthily. So why is it by 11am on Monday morning we simply cant resist the temptation to snack on something calorific and full of saturated fats to fill us up between breakfast and lunch? Even when we try to be good and go out of our way to avoid the work vending machine, our willpower takes a bruising when someone walks past our desk offering us something sweet, crisps, chocs or the dreaded chunk of creamy birthday celebration cake. And all of this while you sit innocently at your desk. Or maybe find the snack cupboard calling out your name when youre in the midst of cleaning the kitchen? The good news is that having three small snacks a day in between three meals is healthy and perfectly normal as long as the snacks are good, nutritious choices. Keep cravings at baySo, why do we snack? Well, the feeling of hunger is triggered by low sugar levels in the blood and by the body dejecting that the stomach is empty - this is teamed with our psychological appetite induced by boredom; seeing other people eat as well as our keen sense of smell. Therefore, in order to stave off hung pangs, sugar levels and stomach emptiness should be kept at the half full level so that our bodies dont go into whats known as starvation mode. This usually means reaching for all the wrong foods - high-fat, high-sugar options.Keeping our body sugars at an acceptable level also means that we dont end up being addicted to sugars and other additives in food - such as salt and saturated fats. When we consume large amounts of excess sugar at one sitting, our sugar levels reach a much higher point than if we had opted for a lower sugar meal or snack. After this peak, if we go hungry for more than a certain period of time, we reach a dip where our bodies feel starved of sugars. At this point we start to crave sugar - and we may well choose a big meal to fill us up. Eating large meals puts tremendous stress on our stomach and intestines, often leading to indigestion. Nuts and seeds for healthy snackingWhat you snack can have huge ramifications for your overall health. Snacking on nuts and seeds can add vital nutrients to your diet and they wont interfere with the rest of your healthy eating plan.Nuts and seeds are so nutrient-dense that you dont need to eat a lot of them. Tey are ideal as stand-alone snack or can be sprinkled on breakfast cereals, used in cooking or even to flavour a gourmet dish. Here are some nutty facts: Nuts and seeds contain high levels of essential fatty acids (EFAs) known as good fats Eating nuts and seeds can help you lose excess weight Nuts and seeds contain amazing amino acids to help form complete and digestible protein Snacking on nuts and seeds will boost your intake of vitamins A, B, C and E Nuts and seeds are rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium, selenium and manganese Types of seedsChia Flax Pumpkin Sesame Sunflower Types of nutsAlmonds Brazil Cashews Filberts Hazelnuts Chestnuts Pecans Pine Pistachios Walnuts Get wise to grazingEating three healthy meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner and three nutritious snacks in between should help to overcome the cycle of craving bad sugars. This process is also known as grazing. Good times to eat snacks are between breakfast and lunch, lunch and 5pm, and 5pm and dinner.By grazing in this way, our bodies will not experience fluctuating sugar levels. We can also aid our digestive system which plays an important part in keeping our metabolism working. Snacking healthily can help to keep the lbs off in many ways: It stops us from overeating at any one sitting. It increases our metabolic rate which helps us to burn up the food we consume. It keeps our energy levels up throughout the day so we can concentrate fully on our work or have enough steam in us to race after the kids all day long. It provides us with extra energy to help us exercise. Best snacking tipsSo what should we be snacking on? Go for snacks that fill you up and that are nutritious for you. There are loads of ideas to try. These include: Wholegrains full of fibre that fills us up and is good for the hearts too Vegetables again, full of fibre and rich in nutrients which help to heal and enhance our bodies Pulses such as chickpeas, lentils, beans these are high in fibre and proteins which keep us fuller for longer Apart from the usual things we see advertised crispbreads, cut up veggies and so on there are more exciting snacks you can write on the shopping list to add variety during your week. How about trying sliced red peppers dipped in hummus or some carrot sticks and low-fat Thousand-Island dressing? These are great for you and have lots of life-giving nutrients. Medical Billing And Coding Profession

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

By Danni R. Medical billers and coders are in high demand among the allied health occupations. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), health information technicians are one of the 10 fastest-growing allied health occupations. It is a challenging, interesting career where you are compensated according to your level of skills and how effectively you use them. Medical billers and coders know this and feel good about the support they provide to physicians, clinics, hospitals, and patients. They know they play an important role in the business office where they are employed. Their work consists of submitting the proper documentation to a number of insurance companies and federal agencies for reimbursement in order for their employer to financially succeed and avoid fraud charges. Their specialized training and expertise lets them find work any place, any time. Numerous opportunities for trained individuals exist in medical offices, clinics, hospitals, insurance companies, and in form of freelance home-based businesses. Advancement opportunities are unlimited! The U.S. Department of Labor states that continued employment growth for medical coders and billers is spurred by the increased medical needs of an aging population and the number of health practitioners. The Occupational Outlook Handbook reports that earnings vary widely and pay levels are governed chiefly by experience and qualifications. Healthcare Careers Offer Job Security, Personal Satisfaction, Challenges, and Rewarding Experiences Many interested in a career in the healthcare field decide to specialize in the medical billing and coding profession. Medical billers and coders are no longer restricted to only the doctor’s or dentist’s office but are now working in hospitals, pharmacies, nursing homes, mental healthcare facilities, rehabilitation centers, insurance companies, health maintenance organizations (HMOs), consulting firms, and health data organizations, or even from home. These highly skilled professionals are earning impressive wages everywhere they are. Typical duties of medical billers and coders include: Explaining insurance benefits to patients and clients Office bookkeeping and other administrative duties Accurately completing claim forms Explaining insurance benefits to patients Handling day to day medical billing procedures Adhering to each insurance carrier’s policies and procedures Prompt billing of insurance companies Documenting all activities using correct medical terminology Scheduling appointments Other job opportunities for medical billers and coders include: Billing Specialist Patient Account Representativ Electronic Claims Processor Billing Coordinator Coding Specialist Claims Analyst Reimbursement Specialist Claims Assistant Professional Medical Collector Claims Processor Claims Reviewer What is Medical Billing? Medical billing is better described as medical practice management and a doctor’s key to getting paid. Although most doctor’s offices request that payment be made at the time a medical service is provided in order to minimize billing, every medical office has a need to maintain patient financial accounts and for collecting money. In a small family practice or suburban clinic this task may be simple and assigned to the medical assistant or nurse but in bigger practices and clinics this is the medical biller’s job! Medical billers and coders usually work forty regular office hours from Monday through Friday on a desk in the billing office or billing department of the professional healthcare office. They must know the different methods of billing patients, understand various collection methods, ethical and legal implications, have a good working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, medical billing and claims form completion, and coding. They also must understand database management, spreadsheets, electronic mail, and possess state-of-the-art word processing and accounting skills, be proficient in bookkeeping, and be able to type at a speed of at least 45 words-per-minute. The work area of medical billers and coders usually is in a separate area away from the patients and public eye. However, even though they are not involved in the actual process of doctors and healthcare professionals providing medical care they need to possess excellent customer service skills when it comes to making contact with clients, insurance companies, and often patients. Medical billers must know how to explain charges, deal with criticism, give and receive feedback, be assertive, and communicate effectively without becoming confused as the person is asking questions. Patients can quickly become frustrated when trying to deal with healthcare providers and bills over the phone. While an increasing amount of patient care is being funded through HMO related insurance, where the patient makes a small copayment at the time of service and the doctor bills the managed care company for the balance, a number of patients still need to make arrangements to pay for their medical services over a period of time. Part of the medical biller and coder’s job is to contact some of these patients from time to time regarding a past due bill. Incoming calls from patients who have questions regarding a bill are also directed to the medical biller’s office. The way s/he communicates over the phone can make or break business relationships. Other specialties closely related to the medical billing and coding profession are: Medical Coders/Coding Specialists Patient Account Representatives Electronic Claims Processors Billing Coordinators Reimbursement Specialists Claims Assistant Professionals Medical Claims Analysts Medical Claims Processors Medical Claims Reviewers Medical Collectors What is Medical Coding? Every healthcare provider that delivers a service receives money for these services by filing a claim with the patient’s health insurance provider or managed care organization. This is also referred to as an encounter. An encounter is defined as “a face-to-face contact between a healthcare professional and an eligible beneficiary.” Codes exist for all types of encounters, services, tests, treatments, and procedures provided in a medical office, clinic, or hospital. Even patient complaints such as headache, upset stomach, etc. have codes which consist of a set of numbers and combinations of sets of numbers. The combination of these codes tells the payer (health insurance companies or government entities) what was wrong with the patient and what services were performed. This makes it easier to handle these claims and to identify the provider on a predetermined basis. In addition, the services rendered (CPT) codes have to match the diagnosis (ICD) codes to justify medical necessity. To do this correctly for each third party payer choices have to be made from a combination of 3 coding systems totaling over 10000 codes, and which change annually. In addition, a completely new coding system, ICD-10, is proposed for reimbursement purposes in the near future. Tools of the Trade CPT books provide all the procedural terminology and ICD-9-CM code books have the most up-to-date information on medical diagnosis coding. The medical coder must stay current on any new ICD-9 code changes that would impact code accuracy and claims submission. HCPCS books contain the complete lists of HCPCS Level II codes with descriptions. They will guide the medical coder through current modifiers, code changes, additions and deletions. HIPAA books help to develop an effective HIPAA compliance plan and DRG books are needed for Medicare’s classification of inpatient hospital services based on principal diagnosis, secondary diagnosis, surgical procedures, age, sex, and presence of complications. Training Training of the medical billers and coders can range from two to four years of college, a technical school diploma, certificates from correspondence courses, to simple home study programs. Upon completion of such training many coders may seek professional certification. Though not necessary, it is recommended and national associations are available for the certification processes. Vocational Training Professional medical billers and coders are in very high demand. Billing for services in healthcare is more complicated than in other industries. Government and private payers vary in payment for the same services and healthcare providers and organizations provide services to beneficiaries of several insurance companies at any one time. Therefore, to reach proficiency in this business, basic training, clinical supervision and continued professional development is essential! Typical Course Requirements are: Medical Office Procedures Medical Keyboarding Medical Terminology Health Structure and Function Health Care Records Management Medical Insurance Survey of Pathology CPT-4 HCPCS II, III Healthcare Laws and Ethics Basic Coding ICD-9-CM Basic Pharmacology Medical Transcription Externship National Exam General Education Requirements Professional Advancement Opportunities A recent American Hospital Association survey showed that about 18% of billing and coding positions remain unfilled due to a lack of qualified candidates. Most companies and practices are looking for schooling and experience mostly because of the legal ramifications of incorrect billing practices. However, medical billers and coders are also able to work independently out of their homes where they established a home based billing office. There are plenty of electronic billing programs available that can be set up through home office computers. Also, there is the possibility to become an independent insurance specialist or consultant who helps patients understand their insurance bills and what they should be paying. Opportunities also exist as patient account managers, physician office supervisors and management, various types of personnel managers in the healthcare industry, health claims examiners, and medial billing and coding instructors. The more education the individual has, the more employment options are available and advancement opportunities become virtually unlimited! Professional Certification As in so many healthcare professions certification in the medical billing and coding field is not required but highly recommended. The days of the single family practice medical assistant or nurse typing out an invoice after office hours are history. Even the smallest offices and clinics have changed to computer billing because it offers greater coding accuracy, saves time, and can be used by administrators and auditors to ensure that visits are being coded to the appropriate levels which increases revenues. Understandably, these offices and companies are looking for individuals who are certified in their field to ensure the employer that the individual whom they hire is competent and proficient. There are numerous well known and well respected organizations sponsoring these types of examinations. Intersted candidates should research each one and find the one that most suits your needs: American Association of Medical Billers (AAMB) offers Certified Medical Biller (CMB) and Certified Medical Billing Specialist (CMBS) examinations. The National Association of Claims Assistant Professionals (NACAP) offer Certified Claims Assistance Professional (CCAP) and Certified Electronic Claims Professional (CECP). The examinations for Certified Procedural Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CPS), Accredited Record Technician (ART), and Registered Record Administrator (RRA), are administered through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). The National Healthcareer Assosciation (NHA) is offering their Medical Billing and Coding (CBCS) credential. If your objective is to work for a medical office, group practice, healthcare provision network, or hospital as the medical billing and coding specialist keep in mind that most private practices, organizations and hospitals throughout the country not only prefer but often require national certification as a competency standard. By Ken Garratt Gardening can bring such joy and self accomplishment to ones life. Over the years its become a wonderful relaxing hobby for me. With each new home comes the challenge for me to convert my existing grass yard into a beautiful garden that will attract birds and butterflies. I begin by designing a master plan on a piece of paper laying out how and when Ill begin removal of the grass lawn and adding trees, shrubs, a water feature or pond then follow through with the final additions of bird houses, bird feeders, bird baths, fountains, and finally the garden art. Each season I begin by converting 25 to 30% of the grass to landscaping. I begin working with the most open areas of my lawn. Remember to keep things looking natural in appearance. Curving lines help to make the garden seem larger in appearance and its just more relaxing. When selecting the plant material always keep in mind how will this plant attract birds? Will it provide shelter? Will it provide food as nectar or berries? You want a garden that not only attracts more birds but is very enjoyable for you. In a matter of 2-4 years youll have a beautiful garden full of birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. Make sure you select a large variety of plants in sizes, colors, and blooms. The more variety you incorporate into the garden the more enjoyment youll get from your garden. I always bring in water features and a pond. Its amazing how much pleasure a water feature ads to a garden. The easiest way to bring water to any garden is a bird bath. There are so many to choose from. Depending on your garden youll want to choose the bird bath that matches the landscaping theme. Natural a rock sculpted bird bath or a stand alone pedestal bird bath. However, my personal favorite is a pond with a waterfall. By incorporating moving water not only will it sound pleasing to you the gardener it will attract birds and other wildlife. The pond allows more landscaping by adding water plants to the pond. The final touch is to bring in a variety of garden art from metal stakes of butterflies placed in flower beds, hanging wind sculpture from trees, or gazing balls. Its a pleasure to be walking around a yard and finding birds and other beautiful creatures showing up on a daily basis that just a year ago prior to landscaping I didnt notice any wildlife at my home. By adding the garden art or sculpture to the garden it adds that finishing touch to any garden. Always remember to take the time to sit back relax and enjoy your new garden. Just think back to when you used to get out your mower and spend hours every week cutting a grass lawn that always looked the same year after year. Now you have a garden that changes season after season attracting more birds and other wildlife to your back yard garden. Together if everyone will just convert 20% of your lawn to gardens our world would become a greener place to live for both humans and our feathered friends.
